Noise
What the results tell us for Gundagai
The major source of noise complaints during the reporting period in Gundagai Shire related to barking dogs (see Table 1). Other sources of noise complaints reported during the period included noisy trucks and agricultural scare guns.
Gundagai Shire Council employed a ranger in 2000–01 to enforce the Companion Animals Act 1998. This resulted in a marked decrease in the number of barking dogs complaints once the message got through to dog owners that Council was taking a stand on the issue. The numbers dropped from 12 complaints in 2001–02 to six in 2002–03, and decreased to three in 2003–04.
Council observed that increased economic development in the shire had resulted in more noisy trucks and not enough truck depots to accommodate them. This had led to complaints about trucks parking in urban areas and in areas not previously used.
Gundagai Council noted that in this shire the small community was more tolerant in coping with everyday noise problems as people knew the parties involved and understood the reason for the noise. This did not preclude complainants contacting Council if the problem persisted beyond reasonable timeframes, but on the whole, most problems were solved by neighbours on a face-to-face basis.
