Goulburn Mulwaree Council Area was formed in 2004 when the former Goulburn City area was amalgamated with the southern half of Mulwaree Shire. The Goulburn Mulwaree Council Area now covers an area of about 323,180 hectares.
As part of a traditional meat and wool growing area, Goulburn Township continues to be the major service, trading and commercial centre for the surrounding countryside, including nearby parts of Upper Lachlan and Palerang Council Areas.
A growing number of tourism-based industries now support traditional manufacturing and processing industries. As for much for the Southern Tablelands region of New South Wales, the council area is characterised by rich rolling agricultural lands.
The eastern part of the council area features rugged, dissected plateaus on the verge of the Sydney Basin.
