Cootamundra Shire covers an area of approximately 152,360 hectares on the south-western slopes region of southern NSW.
Because the shire is at the transition point from the western plains to the Great Dividing Range, the landform, soils, climate and reliable rainfall combine to make Cootamundra one of the most productive agricultural areas in New South Wales.
As of June 2007, some 7527 people lived in Cootamundra Shire. (Source Australian Bureau of Statistics comments on years 2001-2007 ABS Catalogue No 3218.0 (2008)
